May the best Journalist win: African journalists have been invited to participate in a free international training course, ahead of the Football World Cup to be held in South Africa in 2010

African journalists have been invited to participate in a free international training course ahead of the Football World Cup to be held in South Africa next year.

The Twenty Ten initiative aims to offer Africans across the continent the opportunity to experience the tournament through the eyes of domestic journalists, rather than relying solely on foreign news sources.

The project is being supported by a number of media organisations and advocates, including the World Press Foundation, Free Voice and Africa Media Online.

The multidisciplinary project will encourage media professionals to produce and distribute creative and innovative articles, images, broadcasts and multimedia productions about African football.

“Football is an integral aspect of life all over Africa, as well as in the rest of the world. In order to give African journalists a voice, both on the African continent, as well as worldwide a new project is inspired by the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which is being organized on the African continent for the first time,” said World Press Photo in a statement.

At the end of May 2009, 108 participants will be selected, by an independent commission to receive a six-week online course focusing on technical and journalism skills. Upon completion of the online course, participants will attend an eight-day workshop.

At the end of 2009 an independent selection committee will evaluate the work of each journalist and choose 18 of the 108 to travel to South Africa to cover the World Cup in 2010.

The initiative is also intended to extend the reach of African journalists. Stories produced during the workshop and the World Cup itself will be distributed outside of Africa through the sponsor’s various networks.

Any professional journalist that is currently a national and a resident of an African country is eligible.
